What is Life

Among all the works of the Cosmic Mind, the most fascinating is perhaps the “life.” Even more so are us humans, who are pondering this fascination. So is our ability to ponder, to be fascinated, and to live this life. Although our universe is full of fascinating and complex systems and structures, life may be one of the most sophisticated structures that we know of.

Most matter can be easily classified as living or nonliving. Fish and birds are living matter while crystals and clouds are not. For some matters, such classification is not so easy. Viruses, for example, are one such borderline case. Biochemical soups of changing RNA strings in molecular genetics laboratories may be another. This indicates that life may not be a black-or-white property of matter, and some of gray do exist.

Living organisms share certain properties that are recognized almost universally with the trait of being alive. These are motion, organization, growth, reproduction, intelligence, and consciousness. Life is all around us. Incredible diversity of forms, ranging from microscopic bacteria to old, giant trees, from simple algae to extraordinarily wide assortment of birds, from an incredible variety of fishes to astonishing thriving colonies of tube worms at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. No one knows how the first form of life emerged. However, it is often assumed that the first life-forms may have spontaneously arisen out of a prebiotic chemical soup. With time, self-replicating groups of molecules evolved and became more and more complicated. Their abilities to self-organize caused “cells” or cellular structures, the building block of life, to emerge. Cells changed further into roles that led them to harness energy from Sun, other sources, and reproduce and move about in their environment. This ability allowed them more control over their energy supply and physical conditions.

From the simple origins, life has evolved into a wide-ranging hierarchy of forms. Individual living entities live on as they exchange materials, energy, and information with their local environment. Different species of life exploit different niches in the environment. Initially, most energy may have come directly from the Sun through a chemical change. However, with time, fundamental changes took place. Predators evolved. Instead of getting their energy directly from the Sun, these creatures engulfed and digested the smaller and less powerful life forms. This chain stopped with the life forms that got their energy directly from the Sun or some other source of energy. We are acutely familiar with this arrangement of food. It is called the food chain. Most of the life, starting from single cells to large and complex humans, get their energy through this food chain and ultimately from the photons of the Sun. Humans are one of the most successful forms that life has produced. We are, without a doubt, now at the top of this food chain. Our quest to know and understand other life forms and ourselves continues. It is clear that we have made incredible progress in understanding various aspects of life. However, do we understand what actually life is?

About seventy years ago, Erwin Schrödinger tried to answer this question based on known laws of physics. His insight has since inspired many researchers to explore the molecular basis of a living organism. Early biochemists were disappointed when they realized that compositionally, life was not anything special. In other words, all the atoms that made life were widely available on Earth perhaps throughout the universe. Later, with the arrival of quantum physics, this material distinction lessened even further as all atoms are composed of quantum entities that occupy no space and are imaginary mathematical points or computational waves of potentialities in the digital ocean of existence. Like all other matter, life turned out to be composed of various combinations of quantum particles entangled and engaged in quantum computation at the smallest level. So what makes life behave so different from, let us say, nonlife? The distinction comes in the nature and quality of information processing that arises because of incredible organization, which spans from quantum to atomic to molecular and all the way to macro forms. So how does this larger organization or extraordinary computational abilities come about?

It turns out the whole universe had to conspire to produce such computationally astute structures. At the atomic level, most of the elements that engage in living process were made in the big bang. The hydrogen was the first element produced. The rest of the elements that make life were produced at the center of massive stars. All of these heavier elements were spewed out into space in some massive explosions of stars that may be several times the mass of our Sun, generally at the end of their life cycle. Repeated cycles of intense heating and cooling combined matter in myriad of chemical forms.

Today, it is possible in the laboratory conditions to take the common elements H, C, N, and O; stir them together with some heat, pressure, and electric sparks; and obtain molecules of life such as water, methane, ammonia, sugars, amino acids, nucleotide bases, and so on. In fact, today we have evidence that these molecules exist even in the interstellar clouds. In fact, it is not difficult to arrange these molecules in an orderly manner just like in a crystal or jumble them up in a random ensemble as in a gas. However, living organisms are neither ordered crystals nor random mixtures of their building blocks. The building blocks of a living organism are linked in a precise fashion to make functional parts with different levels of complexity. So far, we have not been able to produce a living cell in a laboratory. It does not, however, mean that we will never be able to do so. As we learn more about manipulating nanostructures and molecular structures, which are interacting at the quantum level, we will understand how to form and manipulate nonlocal links between building blocks, which are often indirect and not physical. A mind or information network is essential to manage this incredible informational order among the building blocks. This was the notion that was highlighted by Schrödinger in his decisive work.

The essence of life is not only matter, but it is information that is also at the root of life itself, a mind that creates and assembles information by supplying it a reason or utility. All life has some mental awareness, coordination, and connectivity. This relationship between life and mind raises another level of scrutiny. If we considered plants, bacteria, insects, and mammals, for example, each may disclose diverse mental activities, resulting in varied levels of behaviors including what we call as intelligence. Is there a basic mind that forms the foundation of mental connectivity among all forms of life? The answer is yes. It is the emotional mind. This emotional mind seems to have a common ancestry of informational molecules present in the simplest of single-celled living entities to complex human beings. New research in brain science suggests that it pervades throughout our living body. In fact, it is so intimately connected to all structures and functions of life itself that one may even say that our body is our emotional mind.

LIFE MEANING

My Search for the Meaning of Life

Let me start out by telling you a little bit about my background. I was born in a small city in India. As a kid, I was very curious and studied pretty much most of the time. While most kids of my age were having fun, I would often be studying. I did not really mind it, I was passionate about knowledge. It allowed me to get good grades and admission in prestigious universities. I came to United States to pursue higher education. My passion to gain knowledge continued to serve me well in schools and I got many advanced degrees like Masters, PhD and MBA. Etc. After education I accepted positions in the field of applied research. I still continue to pursue product research and development as career. I am currently a VP of research and development at a major corporation and recently celebrated my 15 years with the company.

As I progressed through corporate ranks, without a doubt, I was getting materially successful and financially very comfortable— but I found myself unhappy, dissatisfied and wanting even more.  To get more, I worked even harder. My body was starting to show sign of fatigue. Chronic unhappiness had found root in my psyche. I was constantly sick and on medications.

Not much made sense. My formulae for what appeared as success in life were not working. My inner conflict was at paramount. I was in search for meaning of this existence, meaning of myself. Being a science person, I thought I will find answers in science, but decades of search in the scientific literature could not take me closer to fundamentally meaningful answers.

By chance, I was introduced to a spiritual master from India known by the name Maharajji, by his followers. The “self-knowledge,” was the culmination of Maharaji’s teachings. I joined the list of aspirant to receive this knowledge. After a year or so of listening his discourses, I was given the gift of self-knowledge. Essentially, what I learnt from Maharajji were the techniques to access my inner self.

There is no doubt that just the process of receiving and practicing techniques of self-knowledge did what years of medicine could not do. I started to get better. I reduced my medicine intake significantly and was well on my way to be medicine free.

Unfortunately, I made what I would call as perhaps the worst student of Majaraji. My quest to connect my scientific knowledge to ultimate meaning was so intense that I continued my search, now following Osho, another spiritual master from India. This state of bliss or enlightenment was the principal promise of both Maharaji and Osho’s teachings. As I heard hundreds, if not thousands, of discourses from Bhagwan Osho, my clarity to achieve a state of bliss by the human body had intensified. My mind was receptive to achieving the bliss state of being.

My search, however, continued, to get answers that would transcend me beyond the powerful paradigm of the rat race. It was becoming clear to me that I had two distinct natures, both very real. One catered for my own self-interest, and the other was selfless or catered for others interest.

What could lead to such opposite nature of self-residing in one body? My search led me to answers, from a surprising source. The answer came from a new, emerging science of quantum information processing that has a potential to combine all science, mysticism, and religion. It provided a clue to explain the dual nature of self as well a new perspective towards the universe we live in.  I was truly inspired by all it had to offer; especially I was mesmerized by the concept and nature of quantum bit. As I connected decades of my scientific research with spiritual wisdom I had attained, I found myself well on path to write my first book.

It was “Road to Digital Divine”. Since this newer understanding rests on digital and informational nature of being and has divine-like qualities, I referred to this as “digital divine.” Writing a book was really not my goal. I was after relief, may be some joy or perhaps bliss.  Connecting the informational and computational nature of our universe with latest science of mind and matter and spirituality, I put forth a new concept of our self, the quantum self deeply rooted in the informational nature of our being.  As I deepened my mental and experiential knowledge of this self, I realized an amazing law of nature. It is like the ultimate formula to be joyful.

If one understands his or her true quantum nature and acts accordingly, one is filled with joy pouring from deep within. It became central theme and the title of my second book called “Joy from Deep Within”, nature of your true quantum self. I will be looking forward to describing briefly the content of these books to you in my next two talks.
